Lleyn flock wins top award for genetic progress

Sheep farmer Duncan Nelless has won the EBLEX Improved Flock Award for 2013 for the Lleyn breed. He farms at Thistleyhaugh Farm, near Morpeth in Northumberland. Organised through the Sheep Better Returns Programme, this award is presented to the English performance recorded flock that has shown the most impressive improvement in genetic merit over a 12-month period, within the breed. Lleyn Breeder in FW Sheep Farmer Award Shortlist 2013

It has been announced that Ed Collins, flock 981 has been shortlisted as one of the finalists for the Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year Award, sponsored by MSD Animal Health. This follows on from 2012 when Lleyn sheep featured many times including commercial Lleyn sheep farmer Neil Perkins who won the award and Duncan Nelless flock 884 who was a runner up. The judging will take place in late June with the winner announced at the awards ceremony in October. Good Luck Ed.

Lleyn sheep originate from the Lleyn peninsula in Wales and until recently were a relatively unfamiliar breed of sheep in the UK.
Over the past 10 years the Lleyn breed has caught the eye of many farmers, and now Lleyn sheep can be found almost all over Britain & Ireland. Farmers soon find that the Lleyn is an ideal ewe, quiet in nature, prolific, has great maternal instincts, milky & will not eat you out of house and home. The Lleyn fits in to many situations and its versatility suits both lowland and upland grazing.
