2023 Ballymena

The Northern Ireland Lleyn Society Sale held at Ballymena, last week, witnessed an extraordinary market performance, characterised by a remarkable top price of 3600gns in the rams, whilst the females rose to heights of £305.

It was a notable day for Declan Mullan of the Mullamore flock from Coleraine, Co Derry who led the society sale, in particular the ram section, when his pen leader Mullamore Lee (02022/2203528) was knocked down to R Martin for that 3600gns figure. Out of a home-bred ewe, he is by Brynowen Jake.

Another from the same home (02022/2203502) and the same sire secured a bid of 1200gns when selling to J Bradey.

Barry and Elaine Latimer’s Girgadis flock from Trillick, Co Tyrone secured three four-figure prices for their rams, two of which came in at 1400gns apiece. First to hit that big money was Girgadis Lucky (01694/2204943), which headed home with K O’Donnell. Close behind making the same money was Girgadis Loki (01694/2205127), which was snapped up by C Richardson.

Moments later, a third Girgadis ram in the form of Lazarus (01694/2205325) went under the hammer at 1250gns. He was bought by R Taylor.

Next best at 1150gns was Mileview Landmark (01618/2203469) from Charles and Andrew Kennedy, Ballyclare, which was keenly sought after by D Mason. He is a son of Brynowen Iolo.

Matching that price was G Calwell’s Daisylane Lorenzo (02449/2200642) from Ballymena. Sired by Trainor Ibrahim, he sold to F Cox.

Across amongst the females, trade proved buoyant with the section cashing in at £168.17. Topping the yearling ewe trade at £305 was the pre-sale show first prize individual ewe from Aubrey Bothwell, Maguiresbride. She sold to I Belton.

Close behind on £300 was Barry and Elaine Latimer’s third prize individual ewe, which headed home with D Mason.

AF Cunningham from Hillsborough was next in the trade stakes with her fourth prize pen of five ewes selling for £295 to I Barr.

A pen of six yearling ewes from Declan Mullan reached a top price of £285 when selling to J Maybin, whilst D Neill forked out £275 per head for a pen of seven ewes from the same home.

Charles and Andrew Kennedy’s third prize pen of five ewes attained £270 to RJM & Mrs ME Dunlop.

F Keirnan spent £260 per head on the first prize pen of five ewes from Barry and Elaine Latimer.

The Latimer’s were back in the limelight when topping the ewe lamb section with their first prize pen of five ewe lambs which sold for £200 per head to D Beattie, Co Cavan.

A McConville, Jerrettspass was close behind with his pen of five achieving a top of £190 per head to Earls Abbey Ltd, Co Antrim.
