2024 Welshpool Society Sale

Shearling ewes forward from W Davies’ Bronallt flock, Morfa Nefyn, met a roaring trade at the annual Welshpool Society Sale, soaring to £290 per head, with the section levelling out at £242.91 – some £76.28 up on the corresponding year.

Managing to secure the leading pen of 5 shearling ewes was Edwards Partners, Foesidoes, Powys.

A few moments later, the same buyer also paid £265 per head for an additional 10 shearling ewes from Mr Davies’ pen.

Just behind the leading females at £275 per head was the first prize pen of five shearling ewes from E & D Jones, Lluest Wen, Comins Coch. These girls were snapped up by A Clark, Kent.

The Jones family were back in the money again when managing to secure £260 per head for a similar pen of 8. These girls headed home with S Hope, Aylesbury.

JA & R Geldard & Sons made the journey from Low Foulshaw Farm, Gilpinbridge to sell their second prize pen of 5 shearling ewes to £275 per head. They were knocked down to IG Roberts, Gwynedd.

 

Ewe lambs enjoyed a tremendous trade where the section climbed £38.22 on the year to average £149.41, whilst prices peaked at £170 on two occasions.

The first pen of five to land the top price came from W Davies’ Bronallt flock, where they went under the hammer to T & PUM Pickup, Higher Crow Tree Farm, Bolton.

The first prize pen of five title at the pre-sale show was awarded to DM & EM Hughes, Brookside Farm, Morton, Oswestry, who later matched the top price bid of £170, selling to Twose Farms Ltd, Carmarthenshire.

Three pens reached £165 per head, the first coming from RV & GE Jones, Pentre Farm, Rhosymadoc who sold their leading pen to M White, Sutton Coldfield.

WJ & DJ Williams, Bodtacho Ddu, Nefyn landed the next two bids at £165, both of which headed home with P Jones, Wrexham.

Next best at £162 per head was a pen of six from RJ Hamer, Daywell Manor Cottage, Gobowen. These girls were bought by SR & RP Spencer, Bentley Fields Farm, Derbyshire.

 

The excitement of a successful sale didn’t stop there, as the ram trade proved to be nothing short of electric, with the section averaging out at 1006.54gns – up 460.54gns on the year – and trade topping at 2550gns for the second prize shearling ram (00621/2324618) from JA & R Geldard & Sons.

Sired by the stock ram (01299/1918597) and out of a home-bred ewe, this boy was bought by O James, The Cleeve, Bridgenorth.

Another Wray Castle ram from the same pen attained 1800gns, this time selling to Slawston Grange Estate, Leicestershire. This ram (00621/2324563) is by the same sire as the pen leader, and again out of a home-bred ewe.

The Lluest flock of E & D Jones enjoyed an excellent trade for their tups, with their best ram (00599/2314803) selling for 2400gns. Sired by stock ram (00350/2106856), he was knocked down to R Jerman, Wern Farm, Herefordshire.

Another Lluest ram (00599/2314868) reached 1980gns when selling to Slawston Grage Estate. This boy is sired by a different stock ram, specifically (01299/2125698), whilst the final Lluest ram (00599/2314941) went under the hammer at 1650gns. A son of stock ram (01228/2017620), he was purchased by WH & IM Butcher & Son, Northampton.

The pre-sale show judge, Helen Bennett, Powys, backed her decision and bought her first prize ram, Borrins Major (01228/2323367) from H & M Dugdale & Son, Borrins Farm, Stackhouse. A son of their Lluest stock ram (00599/2011950), he is bred out of a home-bred ewe.
