Top priced lot, 10 pedigree shearling ewes from C & A Kennedy, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim
HUGE DEMAND FOR LLEYN FEMALES AT ONLINE SOCIETY SALE
Trade was an absolute flyer at the first ever Lleyn Society Online Sale of pure and cross-bred females, in conjunction with Harrison and Hetherington, with entries forward from all corners of the UK.
Such has been the demand for Lleyn females, that this timed auction proved a solid trade for vendors, with prices soaring to £280 per head paid for 10 pedigree shearling Lleyn ewes from C & A Kennedy, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim. All 10 females are sired by the 3800gns Southam Kinsman, which was purchased from Ruthin in 2022. They headed home with Robin McMurtry, Upper Ballinderry, Co. Antrim.
Close behind on £250 per head were three seperate lots of females, the first bid coming for a pen of 10 pedigree shearling ewes from Twose Farms Ltd, Maenhir, Carmarthenshire. These girls are sired by some of the flock’s leading stock rams, including 3500gns Southam Jackson, 5500gns Cragg Kano, Incheoch Kestral and Llaethog Horatio. Forking out the cash for them was Aled Evans, Whitemill, Carmarthen.
Lleyn Mules proved a popular choice for buyers, with DN Bennett & Son, Upper Hall, Plasucha, Powys enjoying a buoyant sale when selling two separate pens of Lleyn Mule one-crop ewes and shearling gimmers, each for £250 per head. Out of home-bred ewes and sired by a Bluefaced Leicester ram, the 20 ewes and 12 gimmers were bought by Charles Jones, Ddol, Powys.
The same buyer also spent £220 per head on another pen of 20 one-crop Lleyn Mule ewes from the Bennett’s, as well as a further £210 per head for a pen of 15 one-crop Lleyn Mule ewes and a pen of 12 Lleyn Mule shearling gimmers.
Next in the trade stakes were E & D Jones, Lluest Wen, Powys who attained a top price of £240 on two occasion for two pens of 25 pedigree Lleyn shearling gimmers. Sired by the flock’s top pedigree rams, and out of home-bred ewes, both pens were knocked down to Georgia Delves, The View, Churchstoke.
Another pen of 50 pedigree shearling gimmers from the same home reached £220 per head and were purchased by Cai Davies, Capel isaac, Llandeilo.
Selling for £230 per head was pen of 5 pedigree shearling gimmers from RV & GE Jones, Denbighshire. Out of home-bred stock, these girls headed home with Dylan Harries, Tyddyn Bach, Llanfyrnach, Pembrokeshire.
Matching that £230 per head price tag were two pens of 25 pedigree shearling gimmers from Manor Farm, East Marden, Chichester, West Sussex. Forking out the money to buy these girls was Hubert Elworthy, Nethercott Farm, Chawleigh, Devon.
The same buyer also purchased two further pens of 25 home-bred pedigree shearling gimmers from R Saunders, Wiltshire. Both pens were knocked down at £220 per head.
A pen of 5 Texel cross Lleyn shearling gimmers made £220 per head, driving from Carmont Valley Livestock, Aberdeenshire. These girls didn’t go far as they were snapped up by Jordan Green, Drumburn, Moray.
J & A Barrow & Sons, Appleby sold a pen of 25 ewe lambs at £150. These February and March-born lambs were 100% grass reared, with 22 of them being born and reared as twins. They headed to Clitheroe to join new breeder, James Hartley.
