Royal Welsh Show 2024

Published on 25 July 2024 at 13:47

It was a great day for Wynne Davies, Bronallt, Morfa Nefyn who returned to reclaim the overall breed championship for a second consecutive year at a very sunny Royal Welsh Show.

His champion, which stood female champion on the day, came in the form of a two-year-old ewe. Having been previously shown here as a lamb and yearling ewe, this girl returned in fine form to claim the top title, having reared a set of twins this year. Out of a home-bred ewe, she is sired by one of Bronallt's leading stock rams - a home-bred ram, which himself secured the first prize ram lamb section here in 2019.

Standing as overall reserve champion to the aged ewe was the shearling ram from Roger and Helen Wells, Glaneri, Ferwig. This tup is sired by a Lluest ram and out of a home-bred ewe. Having been shown successfully as a lamb, he is destined for one of the Society sales next month.

Reserve male honours was awarded to another from the Bronallt pen, this time for the first prize aged ram from Wynne Davies. Sired by the top priced ram bought at the Exeter Society sale in 2019 from Richard Turner, his dam is a home-bred ewe. With this only being his second outing, this ram has already claimed the Great Yorkshire Supreme Championship earlier this month. He will be forward for sale at the Society's Ross-On-Wye auction.

Claiming the reserve female championship was the February-born ewe lamb from Richard and Jen Twose, Maenhir, Login. She is bred out of a ewe which was purchased from the champion pen of ewe lambs at Exeter in 2022, being bred by Will Williams. Her sire is the flock's senior stock ram - Southam Jackson - bred by Lionel Organ and purchased for 3500gns in Ruthin a few years ago. His genetics prove to be a winner, having sired two other lambs that have landed the first class honours here in previous years. This girl will be retained within the flock for breeding.

For the first time, the Society held a young handlers class following the breed judging - with a great show of young handlers present. Taking the first prize honours in the 5 and under category was Bryn Price, whilst Megan Powell landed the top award in the over 5 category. Congratulations to all who took part.

Congratulations to all exhibitors for bringing out a fantastic display of sheep, with thanks to our judge Alan McDonald for doing a great job judging on the day.
