Roscommon Society Sale Report

Prices for Lleyn females were on fire at the Society’s Roscommon sale, where a jam-packed ringside full of prospective bidders witnessed A McDonald of the Ormston flock, Killeigh, Co. Offaly, secure the lead price amongst the shearling ewes at €390 per head.

The pen, which secured second prize pen of five shearling ewes in the pre-sale show, went under the hammer to K Gill.

Next best at €350 was the fifth prize pen from D Oliver, Flock 1850, Riverstown, Dundalk, Louth. They were sold to C Cornyn.

F Leonard, Flock 2830 from Tullamore, Co Offaly landed the pre-sale show championship with his pen of five shearling ewes, which went on to secure €350 selling to R Patton. Moments later, Mr Leonard auctioned off two further pens for €340 and €335 to F Kiernan and M Cooke, respectively.

Matching that €340 price tag was A McDonald, with his second-best pen catching the eye of W Colton.

D Beattie, Flock 2419 from Dillagh, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan enjoyed a fantastic trade for his females, with his top pen selling to €335. These girls headed home with JF Godfrey.

A few individual ewes were forward for sale as well, with the top price in the section coming for the second prize entry from A McDonald. His leader was knocked down at €480 having sold to K Gill.

Just behind was the first prize individual ewe from D Beattie, which reached €380 and headed back to join JF Godfrey.

The action didn’t stop there as ewe lambs entered the ring and proved to be in high demand by bidders, as the section soared to heights of €255 for the fifth prize pen from K O’Donnell, Carromore Hill, Barnatra, Ballina, Co.Mayo. These girls were snapped up by D Ryan.

Close behind on €250 was I Bracewell from Kilgellia, Attymass, Ballina, Co. Mayo, who sold his best pen to D Fahey.

Two pens of ewe lambs reached €210, the first coming for the first prize pen from B Matthews, Quarrymount House, Killeigh, Co. Offaly which caught the eye of D McKean.

M Logue also paid €210 for the third prize pen of five ewe lambs from D Beattie; and for another from the same home at €205 per head.

The ringside got busier as the sale moved onto the rams, with the section topping at €1520 on two occasions. Landing that magic price tag first was the first prize ram from the pre-sale show, Garbally Lleyn Mayhem (02830/230143A), from F Leonard. Out of a home-bred dam and by the stock ram (01930/190614J), he was snapped up by O Barry.

Matching the lead price was the third prize ram, Dillagh Magic (02419/2303252) from D Beattie. Sired by (02022/2103130) and in the top 1% of the breed, he caught the attention of buyer P Jennings.

Three further rams from D Beattie’s pen attracted four-figures, the next being Dillagh Midnight (02419/2303050). Out of home-bred stock on both sides, he sold to F Kiernan for €1480.

Dillagh Milestone (02419/2303159) went under the hammer at €1280 having sold to C Dowling. This boy is out of a home-bred ewe and bred by (01879/209358J).

Finally, G Murphey paid €1160 for Dillagh Marvel (02419/2303132). Another backed by home-bred genetics, he is by the stock ram (:02419/201155E).
