Vendors enjoyed a very buoyant trade for all types of Lleyn sheep forward at the annual Ruthin Society sale, where averages for all sections were well up on the year and prices soared to heights of £315 for the pre-sale show champion pen of females from H Goldie, Southbower Houses, Ruthwell, Dumfries.

The champion pen of four caught the eye of buyer, DE & NM Court, Idle Acres.

Mr Goldie also secured one of the second highest prices at £310, which was paid for a pen of five by G Jones, Bryn Gwynt, Anelog Aberdaron.

The second prize pen of five shearling ewes from the Bronallt pen of W Davies, Morfa Nefyn matched the previous bid of £310 and headed home with HG Thomas, Garreglwyd Farm.

Three pens from JK Golide, Southbower Houses, Ruthwell, Dumfries proved to be popular when landing the next best three prices at £285, £280 and £275. These pens were snapped up by JM Hallam, Cold Harbour Farm.

Two further pens reached £275, the first coming for a pen of six shearling ewes from WJ & DJ Williams, Bodtacho Ddu, Nefyn, Pwllheli. They sold to G Jones.

Orchard Lleyn, Orchard Cottage, Clarencefield sold their best pen for £275 to DE & NM Court.

Aged ewes proved to be a popular choice for buyers who were prepared to pay top prices for the very best Lleyn sheep on offer. Landing the top price in the section was AW Hughes and SE Hughes, Ty Cerrig, Garndolbenmaen who both sold their leading pens of two-year-old ewes for £235 per head. They were knocked down to S Thompson, Culland Hall Farm and E & S Roberts, Llety’r Bugail, respectively.

AW Hughes was shortly back in the money when his pen of three-year-old ewes sold to S Thomspon for £225.

Another pen of 11 three-year-old ewes from W Davies attracted a bid of £185 when selling to HW & SW Jones, Fferwd Llansannan Dinbych, whilst a pen of 9 three-year-olds from WJ & DJ Williams reached £185 and headed home with Gloddaeth Ltd.

Trade for ewe lambs was strong throughout the entire sale, with prices reaching £175 for the first prize ewe lambs from W Davies. They caught the attention of buyer, W Williams, Allt Wen Wen Caergeiliog.

Matching that price was a pen of five from WJ & DJ Williams, who sold their best to Les Jones, 2 Belan Cottage.

Close behind at £170 was a pen from IO & AL Jones, Pen y Bryn, Betws yn Rhos, with the pen heading home to join T Roberts, 17 Maes Y Dre Caerwys.

PW Jones, 2 Belan Cottage bought a pen of five from T & B Fort, Brighton House Farm, Steeton for £160.
